Sometimes self-deception is equal to self-preservation. I used to think pretense was primarily how victims cope, but I've come to believe it's a prevalent human characteristic. It's as if we sell ourselves a narrative to get where we desire to be. I think I write sometimes to sort it out. I believe forgiveness is a remedy for pretense. Perhaps being mindful helps the story of our lives be of less pretension.
