I know women who have done the same. It's a sad defense mechanism but necessary until it isn't. I felt terrible for these friends because the ring did deter most guys, but her looking at it while out in the world brought all her fears forward. It's a two-edged sword.
I'm often struck when I see someone on social media post a sign saying don't text me. Different circumstances and dynamics, but sometimes necessary.
