I admire your kindness, Sheri. This isn't the first time you've made an impression with your brand of empathy. I think you sum it up beautifully with these words:

It may have taken me half a century, but I finally understand the peace that comes with surrendering to another’s actions.

I had an uncle that did the same with me. Back when I was 19, he got in my face like a drill instructor and challenged me to tell him what I was going to do with my life. If I played the game, he would never approve or allow me a win. But I've never been the type to let it go, and I still need to lean toward the surrender you possess. Instead, I smiled and said, mockingly, that my goal is never to be too comfortable. I walked away while he complained about my attitude and never spoke to him again.
