For a pedophile, the criminal sexual act is their way of dealing with their demons. Most often being abused themselves. I think you are right, in the end they don't even know they have a problem. Their focus is entirely on the power they feel by molesting children. If they try to stop they can't because it's their only coping mechanism. There's no cure for that.
